Who Are “The Comic Boys”?

Filed under:Show Announcements — posted by Marty Day on December 11, 2008 @ 9:37 am

As already announced for Super Art Fight III: Turbo, the first houseband for the evening announced was Charm City’s own, AVEC.

A hard working, incomperable band who’s mixture of hard licks and dueling male and female vocals are sure to leave you rocked, and rocked hard, we felt that that would be enough to satisfy you, the hardcore Art Fight fan.

But then we received a mysterious letter.

The letter, written in rather odd verbage, claimed to be from a group called “The Comic Boys”.

In this letter they indicated that they are big fans of Super Art Fight, and wanted nothing more to play the stage at the Ottobar on December 20th.  Despite the fact that we had no idea who they were, we decided what the heck, let’s bring them on board.

Little did we know what we were in for.   No sooner than we agree to bring The Comic Boys on as the 2nd musical guest for Super Art Fight III: Turbo on December 20th, we receive their rider.

For those who aren’t familiar, a rider is a list of requirements, or “perks” necessary for the band to play the show.  Typically, this is things like “we’d like bottled water backstage” or “how about some chips?”.  Nothing out of the ordinary.

But The Comic Boys?  They demanded a surreal mixture of items, including Steak (requested as “medium rare”), no less than 3 luchadore masks (one of “Tiger Mask”), and a human bowling outfit.

What the hell do these Comic Boys have in mind for December 20th? And who are they really?

All those questions and more will be answered on December 20th at the Ottobar, as Super Art Fight III: Turbo hits the stages, and The Comic Boys hit the stage with what they describe as “Japanese Action Comic Punk”.

…wait a minute…

Official 9.20.08 Topic Suggestion Post!

Filed under:Show Announcements — posted by Marty Day on September 4, 2008 @ 8:08 pm

As time clicks closer to SuperArtFight!: Round One, rocking your face on September 20th, it’s time to get you, the fans, involved.

And what better way than getting you directly involved in our Main Event?

When it comes to the Main Event slot at SuperArtFight, it’s about more than artistic talent. It’s about more than drive. It’s about overcoming the odds.

Why, pray tell?  Main Event Art Fights run under different rules.

How different?  Allow me to demonstrate.

Standard Art Fights run 30 minutes, with a predetermined topic for both artists, with the audience judging the winner.

To prove you’re worthy of the top spot in SuperArtFight, you’ve not only got to deal with a 10 minute free draw period (which is with a predetermined topic, to be revealed here leading to September 20th), but new topics for EACH artist, coming every 10 minutes.

One 10 minute free draw period…plus five 10 minute period where the artists have to draw topics suggested by you…equals the toughest hour in artistic combat.

Think you’ve got what it takes? Suggest topics (like say “Batman”, or “Robots”, or “A Monster in a sweater”) in the comments for this post, we’ll tally them all up the day of the show, and those who’s topics get chosen, we’ll send you some sweet swag (so don’t forget to leave a contact e-mail!)

SuperArtFight…we do it for YOU.

Edit, 9/5/08-10:15am To answer the question in the comments, users can submit as many ideas as they like, but we’d prefer that you keep it somewhat focused, so both the artists and the live audience can best understand the suggestion(s).

SUPERARTFIGHT: Round One, SET FOR SEPTEMBER 20th!

Filed under:Show Announcements — posted by Marty Day on July 29, 2008 @ 9:12 am

Since ARTFIGHT took the Ottobar by storm on June 1st, people everywhere have been asking…when will the next battle rage across Charm City?

Worry not, dear fan, as ARTFIGHT upgrades to the next level and SUPERARTFIGHT takes The Ottobar to the next level on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20TH!

Here’s just a smattering of what you will see at The Ottobar, in beautiful Baltimore, Maryland on 9/20:

  • Preliminary Art Battle: Michael S. Bracco vs. Jamie Baldwin
Both fighters are making their debut on the SuperArtFight stage on September 20th, with not just impressions to be made, but a grudge to be settled as well!  For these competitors, not only are they looking to work their way up the SuperArtFight rankings, but it’s also about SPAGHETTI! Michael S. Bracco, creator of the popular indie comics BIRTH and NOVO, has been making waves across Baltimore using the name SPAGHETTI KISS. Ironically enough, Jamie Baldwin, the first female art fighter and creator of the webcomic SUDDEN VALLEY, has been making HER name using the title SPAGHETTI KITTEN.  It’s pasta based KITTIES AND KISSES raging their way to the Ottobar stage, and ONLY ONE can be VICTORIOUS!
  • Preliminary Art Battle: Garth Graham vs. Chris Impink
This is one for the ages, folks!  Two Virginia based webcomickers are making their way to Baltimore on September 20th with something to prove!  For Garth Graham, creator of Comedity, it’s to show that his artistic victory at Katsucon 2007’s Iron Artist competition was NO FLUKE! For Chris Impink, artist of Fragile Gravity, it’s to take back the creative crown that was his in the first place, as founder of the Iron Artist Competion, and to rise to the top of SuperArtFight!  The Battle for the “Old Dominion” is on, and it’s only one place–SUPERARTFIGHT: ROUND ONE!
  • Main Event Battle: Jami “AngryZenMaster” Noguchi vs. Nick “Ghostfreehood” Borkowicz
Ever since ARTFIGHT’s debut at the Ottobar on June 1st, people have clamored for a victory…and on September 20th, we’re going to give it to you.  After battling to a draw this past June, AngryZenMaster and Ghostfreehood will go toe to toe in the main-event of SuperArtFight: Round One.  While the other competitors have 30 minutes to battle in free form, these gentlemen will compete using the main event rules….5 rounds, artistic topics chosen by YOU, the fans…ONLY ONE HAND WILL BE RAISED IN VICTORY.  Be there for the carnage.

If these 3 bouts weren’t enough, SuperArtFight: Round One will also feature performances from not one, but two bands (to be announced on SuperArtFight.com in the month of August), a set from DJ Sheephead of The Megadrives, as well as a variety of local art vendors, including the six competitors mentioned above.

Tickets are available now at TheOttobar.com, for just $10!
